Coast in Running for NZ Wood People's Choice Award
Posted: 01/10/2010

One of the Bay’s most eye-catching commercial buildings is vying for a top timber design award and needs the public’s help to win.
Coast Papamoa Beach’s striking sales pavilion is entered in the 2010 NZ Wood Timber Design Awards which recognizes excellence in the use of our most renewable building material. The pavilion is entered in the Commercial Architectural Excellence category but is also in the running for the People’s Choice award alongside 42 other entries from around the country.
The public have the opportunity to vote for the Bay of Plenty contender by visiting http://nzwood.co.nz/industry-news/timber-design-awards-2010-entrants/ and selecting ‘Sales Pavilion/Community Centre for Frasers’.
Coast Papamoa Beach Project Director Steve Short says the pavilion was designed by leading Bay firm Ambienti Architects and is a real talking point for anyone who drives around the unprecedented residential development.
“It’s the centerpiece of Coast Papamoa Beach and sets the tone for the whole community. We wanted something that was durable and truly blended in with the beach environment so timber was the perfect choice.”
The result is a stunning glass and cedar-clad building which can be converted into professional offices, a cafe or shops once Coast Papamoa Beach is fully occupied. The pavilion comprises two distinctly different shapes – a rectangular box which houses all services and circulation areas, and a sail-shaped glass box, primarily acting as a large open space.
It is finished off with a sectionised cedar cladding which is constructed in a random sequence of six different timber profiles, varying in depth and width.
“This creates an interesting and ever changing façade and the pavilion has been fitted with vertical cedar wings as well as moveable louvers to tie the two parts together,” Short explains. “Coast Papamoa Beach’s pavilion is a building our whole community can be proud of. We would really appreciate the public’s support in the People’s Choice Award to prove we have set the standard here in the Bay and for the rest of the nation as well.”
The awards will be presented at a gala evening at Te Papa in Wellington on 11 October.
